Stuart Walker<\/strong> is Professor of Design for Sustainability at Manchester Metropolitan, Emeritus Professor at Lancaster and Calgary, and Visiting Professor at Kingston University, London.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

He has published numerous books, over 150 academic papers, and many other articles. His award winning research has been presented internationally and his writings have been translated in various languages including Chinese, Portuguese and Persian. His conceptual designs have been featured on the BBC and exhibited in Canada, Italy, Australia and the United Kingdom. He speaks frequently on the media and had the first ever Design for Sustainability exhibitions at the Design Museum, London and Brantwood, John Ruskin’s home in the English Lake District.<\/p>

Born in Porto, Rui Marcelino<\/strong> boasts a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from IST-ULisbon, a Master’s in Transport Design from SPD Milan, and a PhD in Design from FAUL-ULisbon.<\/p>

With a foundational experience at Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, he established Almadesign in 1997, a design studio that specializes in Transport, Products, and Interiors. Under his leadership, the studio has completed over 700 design projects, ranging from industrial machinery to public transportation vehicles like buses, trains, boats, and aircraft.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Almadesign has been honored with multiple awards, including the National Design Award, the Good Design Award, the Crystal Cabin Award, the IF Design Award, and the Daciano da Costa Award. Notably, the studio has recently undertaken prestigious projects such as the interior design for TAP’s fleet, the Alfa Pendular train, and the innovative interiors for Caetano’s new electric buses and Eviation’s Alice aircraft.<\/p>

Beyond design, Rui Marcelino is deeply invested in fostering collaborative networks. He co-founded the PEMAS, served as President for 6 years, and holds positions as Co-founder and Vice-President of the AED Cluster, as well as Co-founder and Board Member of the Portuguese Rail Platform Cluster (PFP). He also contributes as a Board Member at the Technological Park of \u00d3bidos and is part of the General Council of COTEC – Portuguese Innovation Association.<\/p>

In academia, Rui Marcelino imparts his extensive knowledge of design, teaching at institutions such as EUAC, IST, and FAUL at the University of Lisbon, where he is currently the lead for the Master in Product Design program.<\/p>

His commitment extends to the promotion of national and European R&D collaborative projects in various sectors, including Aeronautical, Road, Rail, and Nautical Transport, through initiatives like LIFE, IBUS, ISEAT, DESAIR, ETOILET, INTRAIN, NEWFACE, FLEXCRAFT, MODSEAT, PASSARO, and PASSME. These projects are pivotal in integrating the industry with scientific and technological institutions to pioneer innovative product solutions, enhance industrial competencies, and expand the international reach of diverse partners.<\/p>

Terence Love is a researcher and designer with over 50 year\u2019s experience across multiple fields of design. Terence\u2019s projects have been typically many decades ahead of public adoption. Examples from the 1970s\u00a0\u00a0include development of AI-based design optimization software; open-source software; a word-processor; a digital music recorder\/player; use of early Internet (JANET); developing design research theories; design of hooped tents, rock climbing equipment, micro wind turbines and appropriate technology. 1980s included eco-design and sustainable design; heritage restoration; building energy use; aerial tree seed planting for reducing desertification; and using computers and AI for design;\u00a0\u00a0social business design; measuring and building social capital in deprived communities.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

1990s included clarifying the mess of design research; a PhD identifying foundational theories of design research that integrate social, environmental, ethical and technical design activities; new theories of design cognition, emotion, intuition and. Since 2000, projects have included radical re-theorising of design cognition, emotion, intuition and creativity in ethological terms; addressing violent extremism; Information systems; developing improved approaches for managing complex and hyper-complex systems; new forms of mathematical analysis; crime prevention via architecture and urban design; indigenous night patrols; government policy;\u00a0\u00a0transport safety; cybersecurity; homelessness; and climate change management. In parallel, Terence has undertaken research at several universities; supervised many PhD and Masters students and writing research papers and books. Beyond her conference leadership, Maria Jo\u00e3o F\u00e9lix is an author, with her book, “Strategic Reflection for Design in Portugal: Systematization of internationally produced thinking on the contours of research in the field of design,” emphasizing her commitment to elevating Portuguese design both nationally and internationally. Maria Jo\u00e3o F\u00e9lix’s academic journey includes earning her Ph.D. in Design from the Lisbon School of Architecture in 2013. In 2006, she completed her Master’s in Industrial Design through a collaboration between the School of Arts and Design of Matosinhos | ESAD and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto | FEUP. Her academic foundation was laid in 1998 when she obtained her degree in Design, specializing in Equipment, from the School of Arts and Design of Matosinhos | ESAD. Her professional journey has been characterized by her dedication to teaching in higher education and her work as an Industrial Designer. Maria Jo\u00e3o F\u00e9lix has continuously strived to bridge the gap between academia and industry, emphasizing the importance of adapting educational programs to meet the evolving challenges and market demands within the design industry. From 2012 to 2015, she held the position of a Member of the Council for Evaluation and Quality at the Polytechnic Institute of C\u00e1vado and Ave. During this time, she actively coordinated evaluation and quality efforts, ensuring the highest standards at the School of Technology | EST and later taking on the role of Coordinator of the School of Design | ESD. Her responsibilities included overseeing self-assessment processes for undergraduate and master’s degree programs, actively contributing to quality committees, and preparing comprehensive reports. Maria Jo\u00e3o F\u00e9lix has held significant roles in academia, including Director of the Department of Industrial and Product Design, Director of the Undergraduate Program in Industrial Design, Director of the Master’s Program in Design and Product Development, and head of the Scientific Area of Industrial Design. Her influence is evident in the restructuring of curricular programs, aligning them with the practical needs of the design industry. Her commitment to pedagogical excellence led to a public commendation (no. 1446\/2011) for achieving the highest overall average among lecturers at the School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of C\u00e1vado and Ave, where she taught seven courses over three years. Currently, Maria Jo\u00e3o F\u00e9lix holds the position of Director of the Master’s Program in Design and Product Development and is actively involved in the Technical-Scientific and Pedagogical Councils of ESD_IPCA. She is also an author and reviewer for scientific publications in accredited international journals and has played a pivotal role in organizing scientific events in the field of Industrial Design. Maria Jo\u00e3o F\u00e9lix embarked on her career as a designer in 2006, creating a diverse portfolio of works that have been showcased at various fairs and events. Since 2001 he has worked with various members of the Government in the area of Innovation Policy, having been part of the design, management and monitoring teams for PROINOV (Integrated Program to Support Innovation), as Deputy to the Prime Minister’s Office, of the XIV Constitutional Government (2001-2002); for the Technological Plan and the Lisbon Strategy (2006-2009), at the Coordination Office for the Technological Plan and the Lisbon Strategy, Presidency of the Council of Ministers; of the Digital Agenda (2015) and National Reform Plan (2009-2011), as Assistant to the Secretary of State for Innovation and Energy; of the Digital Portugal Agenda and the National Program for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, (2011-2013), at the Office of the Secretary of State for Entrepreneurship, Competitiveness and Innovation.

Developing a wide range of activities, parallel to his research activity, all tend to enrich and disclosure the interference of Geometry into the cognitive corpus of project design and culture.
With the students, according to his lecturing activity, he proposes the exploration of the geometrical basic repertoire (formal, symbolic and metrical) and the application of projective systems (exploring its capacities of representation, reflection, criticism and communication of the overall process of project design conception and analysis). By 2023, the Municipal Spatial Plans (PMOT) for Bobonaro and Ermera were ratified under the new Land Use Planning Framework Law, while the PMOTs for Baucau, Laut\u00e9m, and Viqueque are in their final stages of development. He represents CIAUD at the IFoU (International Forum on Urbanism) network, and earned 8 national and 3 international awards, including the Scientific Prize of the University of Lisbon in Architecture in 2013, 2018 and 2023.<\/p>

He served as the director of the Portuguese professional journal ‘Arquitecturas’ from 2005 to 2015. In the 2017 municipal elections in Portugal, he ran as a candidate for Vice-President of the City of Lisbon, representing the Social Democrat Party. He subsequently served as a Councillor at the City Council without executive functions. Jo\u00e3o direct his daily efforts towards challenge driven research, aiming to solve practical problems faced by clinicians and surgeons in their daily practice. His research work focuses on augmenting the information at the disposal of the physician and potentiating its precision. To this end, he aims to integrate multimodality image sources combined with machine learning methodologies and personalized models to improve clinicians’ scope of the patient’s anatomy, as well as providing accurate diagnosis and navigation tools. His work is focused in the areas of medical imaging processing, image tracking, deep learning, artificial intelligence and collaborative robots, with over 170 indexed papers in the field. He found and co-chair the IEEE conference on Series Games and Applications for Health. More than 100 students have obtained the degree under his supervision, including PhD, master and undergraduate degrees. He has been awarded competitive funding of over 4 million as PI. She graduated in Design from the Technical University of Lisbon in 1998.<\/p>

Currently, she is the Head of the Project Design Department, a member of the Scientific Council, Coordinator of the Design Doctoral Program, and a Researcher at CIAUD. She has published extensively, including 20 journal articles, 30 book chapters, and 2 co-authored books. Rita has supervised 20 completed PhD theses, over 70 MSc dissertations, and has numerous ongoing supervisions.<\/p>

It was in car racing that he found, from a very young age, the adrenaline that has always accompanied him in life. It was love at first sight, leading him to the highest stages of the sport as an FIA race official, roles in which he has operated on four continents, being one of the most international of his generation. In his free time, as a pilot, he takes to the wheel in occasional speed, mountain, and rally races. An entrepreneur for over 20 years, he founded the \u00c9rre group, bringing together four companies he had previously created, in the areas of communication, information technology and development, environment, and spatial planning, keeping the same naming, while maintaining its functional organization. In 2005 he was an invited researcher at the University of Lund, Sweden, and was a researcher (2002-2011), Invited Professor (2007-2011) at the University of Coimbra, and Auxiliar Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto from 2016 to 2022. Germano Joined INESC-TEC in 2012, being Co-Coordinator for the Centre of Robotics and Intelligent Systems from 2016 to 2023.

Jos\u00e9 Machado is Professor of the Department of Informatics, School of Engineering, University of Minho. He got his PhD in Computer Science in 2002 and Habilitation in 2011. He taught dozens of curricular units in the topics of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and in different and related fields of Computer Engineering. He has always prioritized work geared towards application in industrial domains and public services, in particular courts, hospitals, and city councils. In 1998, Lu\u00eds Abrantes became part of the founding team of Movecho, initially as a Technical Manager, later assuming roles as Production Director and CEO until 2001. Following a management buyout (MBO) in 2001, took the helm as Administrator and CEO of Movecho.
In parallel, he has played a pivotal role in the activities of the region’s business associations. Actively involved in establishing ViseuMarca, he served as its Director and later as President of the General Assembly until 2023. Personally distinguished with the National Award for Metal Furniture Design (1991), two National Product Design Awards (1993), two distinctions at BID10 (Ibero-American Design Biennial) (2010), Best Conference Award “Face to Face” Germany (2011), Honorable Mention at the Red Dot Design Award (2011), Red Dot Design Award winner in the equipment category (2014), Silver Medal of Municipal Merit from the Municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha (2016), two distinctions and one finalist piece at BID 2016 (Ibero-American Design Biennial) (2016).<\/p>

The companies Larus and ProjectoAlba were also awarded with other distinctions, notably the DME Award (2010) European Design Management Award. In the last 20 years, had dedicated his professional life working in non-profit organizations from social economy sector, where he put into practice a transdisciplinary training path, with formal and non-formal education in areas as diverse as Interior Design and Architecture, Fine Arts – Painting (FBAUL – LISBOA), among other training courses. Postgraduate in Communication, Image and Marketing (IADE – LISBOA), with training in Culinary Arts (C\u00e1tedra Ferran Adri\u00e0, Madrid, Spain), Basic Holistic training (UNIPAZ, Portugal), Group Facilitation, and SDG Facilitation (Gaia Education, Findhorn, Scotland), has worked in various cross-cultural contexts. Currently developing consultancy in the area of \u200b\u200bsustainable and regenerative design. Since February 2024, when had been invited to be a Facilitator in the area of \u200b\u200bSustainability by Turismo de Portugal, where he has facilitated several courses (in-person and online training) such as Circular Economy, or Tools for Creative and Regenerative Tourism, or looking for the development of new solutions for Sustainable Tourism in Portugal.<\/p>

Since 2017, that he was Head of Branding at \u201cGaia Education – Design for Sustainability and Regeneration\u201d, an international NGO, present in more than 58 countries, in which he developed, in partnership with UNESCO-GAP, one of this organization’s most relevant projects – the SDG Flashcards – as an integral tool of the \u201cSDG – Training of Multipliers\u201d (translated into 9 languages).<\/p>

He has developed several international projects in the area of \u200b\u200bbranding, communication, design, and corporate identity, for “ECOLISE – European network for community-led initiatives on climate change and sustainability”, “EDSC – European Day for Sustainable Communities\u201d and also for “UrbanA – Urban Arenas for sustainable and just cities”.<\/p>

In the last two years he has performed executive and project management roles for \u201cAshoka – everyone a changemaker\u201d, one of the largest international NGOs focused on building a strong network of changemakers (more then 4.000) focused in social impact and systemic change, present in more than 95 countries.
